Horticulture

Horticulture is a branch of Agriculture science; many Indian institutes offer horticulture as a subset of agriculture; others provide a different degree in horticulture. Horticulturist deals with planting plants, vegetables, flowers, fruits, herbs, shrubs, bushes, ornamental trees, landscaping for gardens, maintaining nurseries, greenhouses, gardens, orchard plantations and also floriculture or cultivation of flowers.

Undergraduate Class 10 +2 (PCB/PCM) – minimum 50% + Entrance Test  3 years
Post Graduate Graduate (B.Sc. ) + Entrance Test 2 years
M.Phil. Post graduate (M.Sc.) 2 years
Ph.D (For those who want to go in academics) Post graduate (M.Sc.) 3 years

Entrance Exam    

There is no entrance exam for this course. Admission is done on the basis of 12th Board exam marks.

Fees   

Depending on the type of institute/quota, fees can range from INR Twenty thousand to INR Fifty thousand per year; similarly, a postgraduate course can cost in the range of INR six thousand to INR One lakhs per year – both of the above are excluding lodging/boarding expenses.

Career Options   

Horticulture is divided in three major branches:

  • Corporations: Horticulturists can seek employment in warehousing corporation and Food Corporation, state Farm Corporation and National Seed Corporation.

  • Estates and Tea Gardens: There are ample of opportunities in estates and tea gardens which also offer great remuneration.

  • Agro-industry Sector: This sector revolves around dairy processing, meat packaging, grain processing, fats and oils, production, fibers, pesticides and other such products. There is scope for great research in this field and also requires sales and promotion, technologists, scientists, as well as in production.

  • Agriculture Management: Students possessing knowledge of management and agriculture are the need of this industry and can venture into estates and tea gardens.

  • Services Sector: This field revolves around fertilizers, seeds and chemicals at reasonable price and also to provide quality food products.
